God loved us first
‘This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. THIS IS LOVE: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins’
1 John 4:9-10
To love, we must first understand the love that has been afforded to us. I will focus on the verse above, specifically the part that ‘not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son’.
This verse firstly shows that love is without consideration. What do I mean by ‘consideration’ exactly? I mean that Gods’ love for us, isn’t based on something that we give to him in return for His love. Rather, he loved us, before we even gave him the chance to come into our lives or give ourself to him. His love is unconditional, we don’t pay a price, he has paid the full price (through the sacrifice of Jesus).
This is reinforced in the well-known verse which I had been taught (and memorised) from a young age; ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’. (John 3:16). This illustrates the extent of Gods love, that he would give up the person he most treasured and cherished in order to forgive every single sin that we have and will commit, knowing that his sacrifice will not even be recognised or appreciated by a significant portion of those He did it for.
We can gather from this that the love which has been afforded to us is selfless, priceless and unconditional.
Prayer for today: God I thank you for your unconditional love. I thank you that you loved me before I even knew you. I thank you that you gave up your Son to showcase your love for me and I pray that I will, in turn, give my all to you. Thank you, Jesus, for your selfless act of love and for making a pathway through the darkness.
